by Bill Jones, Ski Instructor   CSW #33: "Always ski in
balance"
Surely all will agree this skier's body is positioned behind his boots. So is he out of control or does he have a purpose? Likely he would have next extended his legs for a landing. But then he still may have wished to stay a bit back, for when his skis landed in the snow they would have sunk into it a bit and slowed him up, with his body then continuing forward until he again got into a balanced position. Most of the time when seen from the side we seem to be sitting a bit back. We seem to do this because our skis are slowing from friction with the snow, so if we were not slighltly back there would be a tendency to move forward due to the drag on our skis. When standing on a bus or train we do the same, visually leaning back slightly against the accelerating force the vehicle imparts. Usually we do not need to move back much because ski bindings are usually mounted so that the front of our toes are at the midpoint of the skis' lengths and therefore our center of gravity tends to be back anway. So what might seem like being back is likely balanced. main CSW contents
